Oklahoma Fishing Licenses Requirements
Before heading out to any of Oklahoma's 200+ lakes, remember:
- All residents and non-residents need a fishing license to take, attempt to take, or possess fish in Oklahoma.
- Always carry your license or proof of an exemption when fishing.
- If fishing in waters within the Honobia Creek or Three Rivers Wildlife Management Areas, a valid Land Access Permit is also required in addition to the fishing license.
Fishing License Exemptions
Residents
Oklahoma residents exempt from the fishing license include:
- Those under 16 years old.
- Resident owners, tenants, and some family members fishing in private ponds they own/lease.
- Veterans with 60% or more disability.
- Fishermen using pole and line, trotline, or throw line in specific areas with certain baits.
- Non-ambulatory individuals confined to wheelchairs.
- Oklahoma residents who are younger than 18 on January 1 or anyone 64 and older (Exempt from the Land Access Permit for Honobia Creek and Three Rivers WMAs).
To claim exemptions, one must qualify as a resident. This means residing in Oklahoma for at least 60 days before the license application. For lifetime license applicants, six months of residency is required.
Non-Residents
Non-resident exemptions:
- Individuals under 14 years old.
- Those under 16 from specific states.
- Anglers 65 and older from Texas.

- Legally blind or physically impaired individuals and one companion.
- Persons under 18 in the custody of the state or its agencies.
- Those fishing during Oklahoma’s Free Fishing Days (e.g., June 5 and 6 in 2021).

- Job Corps trainees.
- Participants in certain aquatic education events or clinics.
